Was kostet Lytara?

16 – 17Mäßiges Untergewicht
17 – 18,5Leichtes Untergewicht
18,5 – 25Normalgewicht
25 – 30Übergewicht
30 – 35Adipositas Grad I
35 – 40Adipositas Grad II

Funktioniert Lytara ohne Apple Health?

Ja.

Was hilft?

About Lytara

Why does Lytara exist?

I had lost a lot of weight over a long stretch and written down every single number along the way. Then I switched from Android to iOS—and the whole history was gone. The very numbers that would have shown the progress simply weren’t there any more.

I tried a fair few apps after that, and none of them really fit. One was full of ads, the next buried me in features I had never asked for – right down to scanning my body with the camera. Others turned weighing yourself into a game of streaks and badges, or put the export of your own data behind a subscription. And several were run from outside the EU without it ever becoming clear where my numbers actually went. For a handful of weight readings, all of that felt out of proportion.

So I built Lytara: an app that does one thing and nothing else. No ads, no tracking, no account, no server holding your numbers. Your entries stay on your device, and whether you share them with Apple Health is up to you.

There is a subscription here too, but only for analysis such as the period comparison or the goal-date simulator – never for your own data.

And because I know what losing your data feels like: you can always get to yours. CSV export and import are free for good—no subscription, no conditions. When you switch devices, your history comes with you.

Lytara is my first own project and it is built independently. That means nobody is waiting to see growth. It also means answers sometimes take a few days.

What does Lytara cost?

The app is free. Premium is an optional subscription at €0.99 per month or €9.99 per year, with a seven-day trial on the annual plan for eligible new customers. The price shown in the App Store is always the one that counts.

Free for good, not as a trial period:

  • creating, editing and deleting entries
  • history with chart and minimum, average and maximum
  • BMI and the full BMI calculator
  • Apple Health sync
  • the Apple Watch app
  • CSV import and export
  • the daily reminder
  • the Face ID / passcode lock

Premium adds: every period in the trend analysis, the period comparison, the goal-date simulator, PDF export, plus notes on entries, search, weekly values, custom card order and a fixed language choice.

I can't afford Premium right now. Is there a free option?

Yes. The free version isn't a demo mode, it's the app. Logging, history, chart, BMI calculator, Health sync, the Watch app and the complete CSV export are all there permanently without a subscription—including the ability to take your data with you at any time.

Premium funds continued development; it isn't a gate. If something you genuinely need is behind it and a subscription isn't possible right now, drop me a line at lytara@ailtu.de. I'd rather we found a way than have someone skip Lytara over it.

BMI and analysis

How does Lytara calculate BMI?

With the classic formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. At 82.8 kg and 1.74 m that gives 82.8 ÷ (1.74 × 1.74) = 27.3.

Internally Lytara always works in kilograms and centimetres. Whether you have kg or lbs, cm or ft/in selected only changes the display, never the result—conversion is exact (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 in = 2.54 cm).

BMI is shown to one decimal place, but the category is determined from the unrounded value. A displayed 25.0 can therefore still read “normal weight”.

Your height comes from your profile in Settings. During setup Lytara suggests the most recent value from Apple Health if you granted read access. Your height is never written back to Health.

Which standard do the BMI categories follow?

The World Health Organization's BMI classification for adults. Lytara uses the full scale with all eight bands, including the subdivisions of underweight and the three obesity classes:

below 16Severe underweight
16 – 17Moderate underweight
17 – 18.5Mild underweight
18.5 – 25Normal weight
25 – 30Overweight
30 – 35Obesity class I
35 – 40Obesity class II
above 40Obesity class III

Each boundary belongs to the upper category: a BMI of exactly 25.0 counts as overweight, 18.5 as normal weight.

In the BMI calculator, every category also shows how many kilograms are missing to reach it, or how far above it you are. You can try out a hypothetical weight there without creating an entry.

My BMI says overweight although I'm fit. Why?

BMI knows exactly two numbers: weight and height. It doesn't distinguish muscle, fat, water and bone. People with a lot of muscle regularly land in the overweight band on paper without that saying anything about their health.

The scale has a few more limits: it applies to adults. Children and adolescents need age- and sex-specific percentile curves, which Lytara deliberately does not use. During pregnancy BMI is not meaningful. And some medical bodies work with age-shifted normal ranges—Lytara shows the unmodified WHO scale instead, so it stays clear what the classification is based on.

In short: BMI is a rough placement, not a diagnosis. For health questions, professional medical advice is the right route.

I weigh myself twice a day. Which value counts?

Both are kept and listed separately. For history, trend and analysis Lytara averages the values per day. The trend curve additionally smooths over seven days so daily fluctuations don't obscure the direction.

Apple Health and Apple Watch

Does Lytara work without Apple Health?

Yes. Lytara has its own on-device database and works fully without Health access. Health is a voluntary addition, not a foundation.

There is one exception: the Apple Watch app needs Health, because that's where it writes its entries.

What exactly does Lytara exchange with Health?

With your permission the sync runs in both directions and is limited to two things:

  • Body weight – Lytara reads weight data from Health and writes your Lytara entries back to it. Notes travel along as metadata.
  • Height – read only, and only as a suggestion during setup.

Nothing else: no steps, no heart rate, no nutrition, no activity. Lytara also subscribes to change notifications from Health—if you log something on your scale or in another app, it shows up in Lytara shortly after.

You can pause the sync inside Lytara at any time without revoking the permission.

I declined Health access by mistake.

That's an iOS trait: the system shows the permission dialog only once per decision, and no app can bring it back afterwards—Lytara included.

The way around it is the Health app: open Health, tap your profile picture at the top right, then Apps → Lytara, and set the permissions there. Lytara picks up the change by itself the next time you switch back to it.

Why can't I edit some entries?

Entries that come from another app or from a scale belong to that source. Apple only lets the writing app change its own Health data, so Lytara shows those entries but can neither edit nor delete them.

You can change them in the original app or in the Health app under Browse → Body Measurements → Weight. Anything you created in Lytara or the Lytara Watch app is editable as usual.

How does the Apple Watch app work?

On the scale, the watch is usually the only thing you're still wearing—which is exactly what it's for: see the current value, log a new one, done, without fetching your iPhone. It saves straight to Apple Health, and the iPhone app picks the entry up from there.

That's why the watch needs its own Health access. The permission dialog appears on the watch itself, independently of the one on your iPhone.

Data, reminders and subscription

How do I get my existing data into Lytara?

Through Settings → Data → “Import from CSV”. It expects the format Lytara's own CSV export produces: a header naming the unit, then one row per entry with date and time, weight and an optional note.

Date,Weight (kg),Note 2026-08-01 07:30,83.20, 2026-08-02 07:25,83.20,"back from holiday"

Rows that don't match, carry a date in the future or fall outside 30 to 300 kg are skipped—the rest is imported anyway. The easiest route is to export from your old app and bring the file into this shape.

How do I export my data?

Also under Settings → Data. “Export as CSV” is free and contains every entry including notes. “Export as PDF” produces a readable document of your history and is part of Premium.

Both go through the iOS share sheet, so you decide where the file ends up. Lytara sends nothing on its own and clears the temporary file afterwards.

How does the reminder work?

Pick a time in Settings and Lytara schedules one local notification per day, right on your device. There is no server sending you anything and no push token.

If you later revoke notification permission in iOS, Lytara switches the reminder off at the next launch instead of quietly sending nothing.

How secure is the app lock?

The lock uses Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode through Apple's system feature. Lytara never sees biometric data, only a yes or no. As soon as the app goes to the background it locks again.

Worth being clear about: this is a screen against curious eyes, not extra encryption against someone with full access to an unlocked device.

How do I restore Premium?

In Lytara, open Settings and choose “Restore Purchases” in the Premium area. Use the same Apple ID that purchased the subscription.

How do I cancel Premium?

On your iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Lytara. Deleting the app alone does not cancel the subscription.

After cancelling, Premium stays available until the end of the paid period, then Lytara continues as the free version. Your entries are kept in full.

Something isn't working. What helps?

Start with the obvious: update iOS and Lytara, close the app completely and reopen it. For Health issues, check the permissions in the Health app.

If that doesn't help, write to me at lytara@ailtu.de. Useful details: iPhone model, iOS version, the Lytara version (at the very bottom of Settings) and what exactly happened. Screenshots often say more than long descriptions. Please don't include health data that isn't needed for the problem.
